The Institutional Capital Association at Western

Capital doesn't start with a pitch. It starts with a mandate.

WICA is Western's first club dedicated to institutional buy-side finance (pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, and family offices) across every asset class they touch. Open to all faculties.

The funds our members study: the Maple 8

  • CPP Investments
  • CDPQ
  • Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
  • OMERS
  • HOOPP
  • AIMCo
  • PSP Investments
  • BCI
Toronto's financial district, where Canada's institutional capital is managed

01Our Mandate

Where Western
meets the buy side.

WICA bridges the gap between Western students and the institutional investors who move Canadian capital.

Through a year-long curriculum on asset allocation, a quarterly research publication, and a flagship LP-side case competition, members build the literacy and the network to pursue careers in institutional investing.

02The Year

Four events.
One thesis.

Every event maps to a different stage of how institutional capital gets deployed.

Q1

The Allocator Series

Working professionals from Canada's largest pension funds, OCIOs, family offices, and endowments join us on campus and over Zoom to talk candidly about how they invest.

Q2

The WICA Letter

Our quarterly research publication on Canadian institutional capital. Real research, real bylines, written by members.

Q3

LP Case Competition

Our flagship case competition, run from the limited partner's seat: teams build a real asset allocation, not a stock pitch.

Q4

The Capital Capstone

The year's thesis work culminates in a capstone, presented to the people who hire for it.

03Why WICA

The seat that doesn't
exist yet at Western.

  • The buy side, beyond stock pitching

Most finance education starts at the company level: pitch a stock, model a deal, build a DCF. WICA starts at the institutional level: how a trillion-dollar pension fund decides where capital flows in the first place, across every asset class and every cycle.

  • Open to every faculty

Finance, economics, math, engineering, philosophy: institutional investing rewards rigorous thinkers from any background. General membership is open to every Western student; executive and research positions are competitive.

  • Real research, real output

Members contribute to the WICA Letter, our quarterly publication on Canadian institutional capital. Published work with your name on it.

  • Speakers from the funds themselves

The Allocator Series brings working professionals from Canada's Maple 8 funds, OCIOs, family offices, and endowments to campus and Zoom to speak candidly about the seat they sit in.

  • Built to be the bridge to Bay Street

The case competition, the capstone, and the research letter exist to put members in front of the people who hire, with credibility earned, not just claimed.

04The People

Every fund starts with
someone who picked up the phone.

Meet the members building WICA's first mandate. Select a name to hear from them.

"I noticed the smartest people I knew at Western were heading to the buy-side but had to figure it out on their own. WICA is the room I wanted to walk into in first year, and now it exists."

Alexander Videv Founder & President

"I transferred from Queen's because Western has the deeper finance bench: the alumni, the pipeline, the reputation. WICA is where I get to take that focus past stock pitching and into how Canadian institutions actually allocate capital."

Justin Alexandrowicz VP Finance

"Institutional capital is one of the most underrated career paths in finance, and WICA is built around treating it that way. Running the year of events behind that thesis is the kind of work I want my undergrad to be about."

Julia Da Silva VP Events

"Networking is the part of finance I've always been best at: the rooms, the introductions, the long-term relationships. WICA is the first place at Western where those connections actually compound, because the people on both sides care about the same thing."

Zachary Glover VP Communications

This seat is still open. If you want to help build it from the ground floor, and put your name on it, this is the one to apply for.
